Cookies...mmm

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies!!!

On Thursday, October 10th, we held our meeting at Moncion's Independent Grocer.  The purpose of our meeting was to sell delicious Chocolate Mint Girl Guide Cookies to members of the Riverside South and Manotick community.

Our girls were amazing little cookie sellers.  They were full of enthusiasm; sometimes they were a little too passionate :-).  Our girls managed to sell 11 cases of cookies (132 boxes) in just over an hour!  Wow!!!

For those girls still keen on selling, the unit still has a number of cases available for sale.  Cookies make great gifts for Teachers, Babysitters, and Bus Drivers!  For each box of cookies we sell, we get just over $1 for our unit's budget.

Brownie Owl and Cookie Owl are so proud of all our girls!  Here are a few photos of the girls selling cookies.  We hope you enjoy!

Welcome Back or Aboard the 2013-14 Year!!!

Twit-Twoooooo and welcome to another great Brownie year.  Our first meeting was held on September 19th.  It was great to see some familiar faces and lots of new ones too.   This year we have two new Guiders leading our Brownie unit: Krista and Kelly.  Both ladies are full of passion for Guiding and are dedicated to making this year a success.
How did the girls know that
Cookie Owl loves all kinds
of sweet treats?

At our first meeting, the girls were given the task of choosing owl names for our new Guiders.  After some discussion (and a bit of giggling), our Guiders were given their owl names: Krista is now Brownie Owl and Kelly is Cookie Owl.

Speaking of cookies, fall cookie selling time is almost upon us.  Fundraising through cookie sales is the "lifeblood" of our program.  Our unit has 60 cases of mint cookies to sell this fall.  We ask that each girl take at least one case of cookies (payment of $60 is due upon pick up). Pick-up dates will be provided shortly.  Girl Guides offers incentives to girls who are eager to sell cookies - this program is called Cookie All Stars. We will be keeping track of the number of cases each girl sells this year.  If you have any questions, please let your Guiders know.

We are working on earning our Key to Brownies with our new girls. We ask that you help them practice their Brownie Promise and Law as well as their songs.  We also have some fun activities coming up including a visit to a planetarium, a visit from a veteran, and a group cookie selling event.  Stay tuned...

Whoooo whooooo...

Gotta Paint Details (May 2) and One More Meeting on May 16!

The meeting is not likely to last the full 90 minutes and parents are invited to stay. (For those of you wondering, OSU U9 soccer does not start until after that date.)

May 16 Meeting (to be held at St. Jerome):
·         Opening
·         Recognize Fiona for completing all her badges and girls who were not at group advancement
·         Hand out scrap books
·         Hand out Gotta Paint suncatchers
·         Sing a few songs
·         Closing
·         Cupcakes

It has truly been a great year! We will miss our Brownie troop and are looking forward to keeping in touch.

Thanks!

February Updates and Spring Camp Info

Hi families,

Just a few updates:
  • February 10: If your Brownie would like to work on her Swim! Skate! badge this weekend, some of the group will be meeting to skate at Spratt rink at 2:30pm this Sunday, February 10. All family members are welcome, but please let us know if you think you will be coming.
  • Valentine’s Day: this week the girls will be working on their scrapbooks. If you have any special thoughts about your Brownie for her to include in her scrapbook (i.e. We love Tina’s smile! Amy is such a great helper at dinner time! Marsha is a great big sister, etc.), please write them down and send them in over the next few weeks.  Also, please note that we will not be doing a traditional Valentine card exchange at the meeting.
  • Thinking Day Event, Monday February 25: The Community’s Thinking Day event will be held at Bernard-Grandmaitre elementary school (Spratt at Canyon Walk). This year’s theme is Child Health. Girls are asked to arrive at the school at 6pm and pick-up will be at 7:45pm. Each girl is asked to bring their dues for a donation to the World Friendship Fund, a pair of indoor shoes, and a non-perishable food item. Please let us know if your Brownie cannot attend.
  • Spring Camp, May 10-12, 2013: This year’s spring camp will be held at the RCMP campground (5 minutes down River Road) on the May 10-12 weekend. Our theme will be the Wizard of Oz! Permission forms and additional details will follow, but if you could let us know if you think your Brownie will be coming, we would appreciate it. If your Brownie has other commitments that weekend (ie. dance recitals), but would still like to participate, come talk with us and we can let you know what options are available.
See you soon!

Thank you to Evelyn!

Hi Families,

The girls had a fantastic time at our yoga class on Thursday. A big thanks goes out to Evelyn at Samadhi Wellness Centre (http://samadhiwellness.ca/) for taking the time to volunteer in our unit. If your Brownie is interested in taking a child's yoga class, more details on the upcoming session (starting in mid-February) can be found on Samadhi's website.

This week the girls will be taking part in running games. Please ensure they bring indoor shoes they can run in.

See you Thursday!

Yoga Night - Jan. 24

Hi Families,

Just a reminder that this week is yoga night! Brownies are asked to bring a yoga mat if one is available and to dress in comfortable clothing. Please bring indoor shoes as well, as we will be having a short regular meeting after the yoga class. Our meeting will run from 6 to 7:30 this week at St. Jerome.

A couple of other notes:

-          We have been a bit lax (well, very lax – sorry about that!) on dues collection for the past 2 weeks due to the field trips. Please remind your Brownies to bring their dues this week.

-          Thinking Day – this year the Community’s Thinking Day Celebrations will be held on Monday, February 25 at  the French Catholic school from 6-7:30. More details will follow. This will replace another one of our Thursday meetings closer to Thinking Day.

Lastly – We would like to take a moment to welcome a new Brownie and  a new Leader to our group! Maya and her mom Tracey (aka Sunny Owl) joined our group at the beginning of January. Welcome to you both!

Thanks
Jen (Tawny Owl)
